An interesting study in the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry discovered that parents are passing their fear of the dentist on to their children. It appears that the greater the dentist fear in one family member, the higher the level of fear in the rest of the family.
Even more interesting is the role that father’s play in the fear factor. The study found that the father’s opinion about going to the dentist plays a big role in whether a mother’s fear of the dentist gets passed on to their children. Apparently, children pay very close attention to the father’s reaction to the dentist to decide for themselves if the dentist is something they should fear.
