Recent media stories are sharing a miracle and all-natural solution to teeth whitening: strawberries and baking soda. The stories claim that brushing with a mixture of fresh strawberries with baking soda is just as effective as whitening strips or even a professional whitening treatment at your local Newnan dentist. It’s cheap and organic, so what’s not to like?
The Actual Dental Results Don’t Lie
A dental researcher from the University of Iowa set out to test this new miracle recipe. The researcher compared the homemade strawberry recipe with whitening strips available at your local grocery store and against a professional whitening treatment available from your dentist. The all-natural treatment was followed for 10 days to match the treatment protocol of the whitening strips. Were the results from the home remedy stellar? Did this treatment blow everything else out of the water? Hardly.
While there were some improvements seen with the strawberry and baking soda concoction, the improvement was largely superficial and due to removal of plaque buildup. There were no discernible improvements in the stains in the tooth enamel that were achieved with the whitening strips and the professional whitening treatment.
Even more important, there is a downside to this treatment. Continued and focused application of the strawberry mixture led to a reduction in the service hardness of the teeth. This was a side effect of the citric acid of the strawberries. Similar recommendations of whitening from the use of apples or lemons were also ineffective at penetrating enamel stains.
What can we take away from this? Don’t ditch your healthy eating habits – just don’t use your daily servings of fruit as a toothpaste.
